From the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, such as the mesopotamian and egyptian, the already conceived the patio as an essential element in the public and private buildings. In the roman era, the courtyards is located in the heart of the Domus.
After the Christian Reconquista in 1236 and the incorporation of Córdoba to the castilian crown, the city began to be filled with palaces built by the high aristocracy, some of them on old arab houses. These buildings included often multiple patios. With the time, when many noble families were leaving the city, the courtyards became occupied by humble families, becoming houses of neighbors
During the Tour the Patios of Córdoba we are treading in these old houses, which share a characteristic elements. Among them, stands the “enchinado cordoba”, a pavement of pebbles of stone placed by hand, which when wet retain moisture, cooling the atmosphere in the hot days. This type of soil can also be found in the streets and squares. In addition, the doorways are often decorated with antiques.
The pots with flowers of vivid colors, the presence of water in wells and fountains, and the old laundry, that evokes the daily work, are essential elements of these patios. In some, are also retained kitchen utensils and antique furniture that transport us to the past.
